Tsai & Yoshikawa x Hermes London window display photography by Tiffany Lin

Tsai & Yoshikawa x Hermès: Lighthearted

I had a festive start of the year - with Artists Tsai & Yoshikawa’s festive design for luxury fashion brand Hermès’ UK and Ireland stores. They created a series of artistic window displays and in-store installations to celebrate Hermès' 2022 theme, 'Lighthearted!'

I photographed their work at the Bond Street and Sloane Street stores, capturing the art as well as the character of the surrounding streets and historic buildings. While reflections in the store windows posed a challenge, I managed to work around them, and of course, the retouching played a part! This allowed me to showcase not only the installations but also the unique blend of art and the vibrant urban environment.

I've been collaborating with the artists since 2015, capturing the vibrancy and creativity of their work through film and photography. Documenting their colourful and expressive art has been a rewarding journey, filled with inspiration. It's been a pleasure to witness their artistic growth and evolving styles, which has not only honed my skills but also deepened my appreciation for their art!

The Ministry of Culture of Taiwan - Cultural Events in the UK

Two standout moments from my projects with the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan in the UK were creating documentary videos that captured the brilliance of Taiwanese artists at the Liverpool Biennale 2023 and the group exhibition Li Yuan-Chia and Friends at Kettle's Yard. These projects didn’t just spotlight amazing art—they brought Taiwan’s vibrant cultural stories centre stage, sparking conversations across the international art scene.'

As a documentary photographer here, my work went beyond simply capturing the artworks; it delved into the stories, processes, and personal journeys behind them. I aimed to reveal the artists' thoughts, inspirations, and the profound significance of bringing such culturally rich pieces to an international stage. These documentaries are essential in providing context and depth to art exhibitions, helping audiences connect with the cultural and personal narratives that shape the art. Beyond the exhibitions, they contribute to a broader dialogue about culture in global art forums, enriching the understanding and appreciation of diverse artistic traditions.

Ngialibalibade – to the Lost Myth, Eleng Luluan, Liverpool Biennale 2023

Eleng Luluan, an Indigenous artist from Taiwan's Rukai tribe, explores themes of Indigenous identity, cultural memory, and the preservation of her people's myths. In her piece Ngialibalibade ("to the Lost Myth"), she reclaims fading Rukai narratives endangered by modernity, colonisation, and globalisation. By weaving traditional motifs into contemporary art, Luluan revitalises these myths, ensuring their visibility and relevance in the global art scene.

Li Yuan-Chia and Friends, Kettle’s Yard, Oxford

The exhibition at Kettle’s Yard celebrates the life and work of Li Yuan-Chia, a pioneering artist, poet, and curator who was influential in the UK art scene during the mid-20th century. The exhibition explores Li’s innovative approach to abstraction, his use of diverse media, and his role in fostering artistic communities, particularly in the UK. Alongside his work, the show highlights the collaborative relationships he cultivated with other artists, showcasing the dynamic exchange of ideas that shaped his creative journey.

The New Dorothy Circus Gallery

I was thrilled to have the chance to photograph the newly renovated Dorothy Circus Gallery, capturing its fresh look and the new artwork on display. My role as a photographer involved documenting the gallery's interior, decor, and the unique atmosphere that has been meticulously crafted.

I photographed the various elements that define the gallery's updated space, paying close attention to the interplay of setting and lighting. This included capturing the elegant decor, the positioning of artwork, and the intricate details that contribute to the gallery's distinctive aesthetic. The artwork itself was a focal point, and I worked to highlight the textures, colours, and emotions conveyed through each piece. The lighting within the gallery played a crucial role in enhancing the visual experience, and I carefully adjusted my shots to showcase how the lighting design accentuated the artworks and overall ambiance.

From wide-angle shots that provide an overview of the entire space to close-ups that capture the finer details of the decor and artworks, my photographs aim to provide a comprehensive visual narrative of the gallery's transformation. The images not only document the gallery's new face but also celebrate the artistry and thoughtfulness behind its design. They serve as a visual journey through the gallery, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate interplay between art and environment in this new space.

Corporate Event Photography

Bridging & Commercial Awards 2023

I was honoured to photograph the prestigious B&C Awards 2023, organised by the Medianett Publishing. Known for its extravagant themes, this year's event embraced a vibrant Rio-Carnival atmosphere, setting a lively and colourful tone for the evening.

As the photographer, I captured the evening's dynamic energy, starting with an electrifying performance by passistas and drummers, who infused the venue with the infectious rhythm of carnival. The excitement continued with the awards ceremony, where distinguished guests were recognised for their achievements – this is when I got to captured the excitement from the winners as well as the posed shots of winners with the award in their hands. The night culminated in an unforgettable after-party, with attendees joyfully dancing and celebrating in true carnival spirit. It was a privilege to document these moments, from the spectacular performances to the joyous celebrations, creating a visual narrative of an extraordinary event.

The Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific academy still in operation, is home to an awe-inspiring collection that spans centuries of scientific achievement. Their library is a vault of rare and unique items, each one a milestone in the grand narrative of scientific progress.

I had the thrilling opportunity to dive into the heart of The Royal Society’s remarkable collection and their meticulous restoration work. From Martha Gerrish’s mesmerizing drawing of a sundog to other priceless artifacts, each piece is a treasure trove of scientific marvels and historical intrigue.

But the excitement doesn’t stop at their collection. The Royal Society is also famous for its dynamic public events that make science come alive. Whether it's unravelling ‘Fake, Forgeries, Misinformation’ or diving into ‘The Forensics,’ their events are as engaging as they are enlightening. The annual summer events and soirées are a blend of education, scholarly discussion and sophisticated socialising, bringing together enthusiasts and experts in style.

This year, I’ve had the privilege of working extensively with The Royal Society and capture the vibrant pulse of their activities. From high-energy conferences and thought-provoking lectures to elegant soirées and interactive exhibitions, documenting these moments has been an exhilarating journey. Each event showcases The Royal Society’s role in advancing knowledge and sparking curiosity, all while blending serious science with a touch of fun and flair.

Go Cardless and Charge Bee’s Axe Throwing Networking Event

I had the opportunity to document a unique networking event in Whistle Punks Urban Axe Throwing London, organised by GoCardless and Chargebee. My role was to capture the vibrant atmosphere and diverse activities throughout the evening.

The event started with drinks and casual networking, creating a relaxed atmosphere for attendees to connect and exchange ideas. I captured candid exchanges and lively conversations, highlighting the evening's informal vibe. A key moment was the talks by industry leaders from Pret a Manger and Butternut, where I focused on the speakers' expressions and the audience's engagement, showcasing the insightful exchange of knowledge. The event then transitioned to axe throwing, adding a fun and unconventional twist, followed by pizza and more drinks, allowing attendees to continue networking in a relaxed setting.

It was an enjoyable experience to document such a dynamic event, blending professional discussions with unique and entertaining activities. My goal was to authentically capture the energy and essence of the evening, ensuring that every moment, from the insightful panel to the laughter during axe throwing, was well-documented.

PA Housing Groundbreaking Ceremony

PA Housing Groundbreaking Ceremony Press Photography by Tiffany Lin

I recently had the pleasure of covering a truly exciting event—the start of PA Housing's West London regeneration scheme in Southall. As the press photographer, my job was to capture the energy and significance of this groundbreaking moment—literally!

The day was all about big plans and even bigger machines. For the ceremonial groundbreaking, I got creative, lining up two excavators symmetrically in the background. With their booms stretched high and buckets raised, they perfectly framed the key players. It was like these giant machines were giving a salute to the future!

With the construction signboard and urban landscape in the mix, the setting was a perfect blend of ambition and progress. The final images didn’t just capture a milestone—they told a story of transformation, showing how Southall is on the brink of something great.

Professional Portraits

I have a deep passion for portrait photography and take great satisfaction in my clients' appreciation of my skills and the value of professional portraits. Unlike many modern commodities, a professional portrait is a meaningful investment. Clients aren't just receiving photos; they're investing in an experience that captures lasting memories. Whether it's for a business profile, a significant milestone like graduation, yearly family or company Christmas cards, or simply documenting oneself at a particular moment in time, these portraits are something to cherish and to be displayed proudly.

As a portrait photographer, I always begin by discussing the client's vision and ideas. If necessary, I create a moodboard to ensure we're aligned on the visual concept. This step is crucial because our interpretations of terms like "natural" might differ. Using reference images to communicate the desired style, aesthetic, and even specific poses is the most straightforward and efficient way to achieve a shared understanding. This process helps us clarify expectations and ensures that the final photographs accurately reflect the client's vision before the session.

During the portrait shoot, I prioritise creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere to help my clients feel at ease. This approach allows their natural personality to shine through, resulting in more authentic and engaging portraits. After the session, I carefully retouch the photos, paying close attention to the client's specific preferences and requirements. This includes adjusting details like lighting, colour balance, and any desired enhancements to ensure the final images reflect their vision while maintaining a polished and professional finish.

I find joy not only in taking photos, but also in the conversations I have with clients. Recently, discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on photography have come up frequently. I believe that while AI can be a valuable tool for assisting photographers in certain technical aspects, it cannot replicate the nuanced creativity and emotional connection that human photographers bring to portraiture. Instead of replacing us, I see AI as enhancing our capabilities and efficiency, allowing for even more creative possibilities. What are your thoughts on this?

Special Moments

Elena & David's Wedding

Last year, Elena hired me to take her portraits, and this year she invited me to photograph her wedding at the stunning art-deco Wandsworth Town Hall. The venue's elegant architecture provided a perfect backdrop for the ceremony and the couple shots. As the wedding photographer, I focused on documenting every detail, from the bride's expressions and the couple's exchanged vows to the laughter and joy of the guests.

The celebration continued at a charming restaurant in Clapham - Upstairs, tastefully adorned with elegant flower arrangements that reflected Elena's refined taste. My role was to capture the intimate and heartfelt moments during the lunch celebration, including the couple's interactions, the toasts, and the subtle details of the beautiful décor. It was a joy to capture these moments, from the grand setting of the town hall to the warm and beautifully decorated lunch. The day perfectly encapsulated the couple's unique charm and style, and it was a privilege to document such a special occasion.

Christmas Family Shoot

Photography by Tiffany Lin

On Christmas Day, I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely family's celebration in their home in Kensington. The session beautifully captured the festive atmosphere of their home, adorned with elegant Christmas decor. I documented the joy of the family as they opened presents, the laughter and fun of playing games together, and the warm holiday spirit.

We also took various group family photos, preserving precious memories of everyone gathered together—especially since grandma rarely gets to join the kids! It was a delightful experience to capture these moments of togetherness and celebration, creating a collection of images that will be cherished for years to come.

Not only did I begin 2023 with a festive Hermès installation shoot for artists Tsai & Yoshikawa, but I also had the privilege of ending the year with this joyful family Christmas shoot. Thank you for reading my blog. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year! 😊

Photography for Art & Design

What better way to kick off the year than with a dose of art? This year, I started with Dorothy Circus Gallery’s exhibition opening event 'MILK', a group show that explores the timeless and cherished theme of maternity, exploring the essence of nourishment, unconditional love, and the care for children in diverse forms. Other exhibitions that I covered this year were 'Maruyama Junna - Who Am I', 'Levalet - Let's Get Lost', 'Luke Chueh, Tada Koiichiro, Clementine De Chabaneix, Silvia Idili Group Show' and 'BLIC - Joy of Spring'.

As part of my work, I usually capture the exhibition's setup before the guests arrive, preserving the art and the space, and then capture vibrant atmosphere of the opening night. Having collaborated with the gallery on numerous exhibitions over the years, I never cease to be amazed by the captivating art they showcase. If you're drawn to avant-garde and unusual art, this gallery is an unmissable destination!

Fleur Ward Interior Design Project in Whitechapel

Another exciting project that I had the chance to work on was photographing the talented interior designer Fleur Ward's latest project in Whitechapel. Fleur’s work is always a visual feast, and this new project was no exception. Having collaborated with her on several projects, I'm consistently impressed by her bold use of colour and her knack for creating vibrant, dynamic spaces. Each project is a fresh adventure, showcasing her unique ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary works of art.

Fashion Hong Kong - Sustainable Designer Showcase

I had the pleasure working with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council on the Fashion Hong Kong's Sustainable Designer Showcase. The event took place at The Mills Fabrica, a perfect venue for celebrating all things sustainable. It was an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge collections from Hong Kong designers that are driving positive change through sustainable designs and educating consumers to make conscious purchases.

My role was to capture the magic of the exhibition setup with photos and video, and document the excitement of the opening night. From the stunning displays to the buzz of the crowd, it was an amazing experience to highlight how fashion and sustainability can come together in style!

The Ministry of Culture of Taiwan - Cultural Events in the UK

As always, I document a wide variety of events organised by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan. These events are dedicated to sharing and celebrating Taiwanese arts and culture within the UK, offering a window into the country’s rich and diverse cultural landscape.

My work involves capturing the energy and vibrancy of performances, the creativity and detail of art exhibitions, the storytelling and creative ingenuity of film festivals, the insightful dialogues of talks and panel discussions, and the enriching interactions of cultural exchanges. Each event provides a unique opportunity to showcase Taiwan's distinct heritage and creative expression, making it accessible and engaging to an international audience. Through my lens, I aim to tell the story of Taiwan's cultural richness and its dynamic presence in the global arts scene.

Below is a summary video of the projects that I have documented this year, with all photos and videos created by me.

Projects:

CharWei Tsai, Between the Atom and the Universe (talk), Tate Modern, London

Chin-Yin Chong, Artist in Residency, Delfina Foundation, London

Corporate Event Photography

Governor Omar Fayad awarded Freedom of the City of London

I had the exciting opportunity to document the Governor of Hidalgo, Mexico, Omar Fayad, as he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London at the beautiful Guild Hall. The ceremony was full of history and tradition, with the governor receiving a certificate and joining the ranks of notable figures like Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.

Fun fact: The Freedom of the City of London is a historic honour dating back to the Middle Ages! It originally granted the right to trade and certain privileges within the City, but today, it's a symbolic award recognising significant contributions to London or outstanding achievements. While it doesn't come with specific legal privileges anymore, the ceremony maintains a strong sense of tradition and honour.

Another organisation that has a long history that I have been working with is The Royal Society. Founded in 1660, it is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. This is the second year that I took photos of their summer science exhibition and soiree, along with other events such as the Prize Lecture by Professor Jacqueline Cole.

The Royal Society's motto, "Nullius in verba," means "Take nobody's word for it," reflecting its commitment to empirical evidence. Notably, Isaac Newton, a former president, had his groundbreaking work on gravity published through the Society. Today, it's also known for awarding prestigious medals and funding early-career researchers. Did you know, the Royal Society’s archives hold over 350 years of scientific history, including Benjamin Franklin's kite experiment papers!

Commercial Photography

Crystal Maze

I had the pleasure of collaborating with Little Lion Entertainment on a series of exciting themed shoots at the Crystal Maze Live Experience in London and Manchester. We the celebrations for Easter, Pride and Halloween to life, each event capturing the unique spirit and excitement of these occasions.

For Easter, we transformed the iconic maze into a whimsical wonderland full of festive decorations. During Pride, the maze was ablaze with rainbow colors and lively energy, reflecting the vibrant and inclusive spirit of the event. Halloween brought its own magic, with spooky decorations and eerie atmospheres turning the maze into a haunted adventure. Each project was a unique blend of creativity and fun, showcasing the versatility of the live experience and the vibrant energy of these special events.

Professional Portraits

Portraits, headshots, and personal branding photos are much more than just images; they're a snapshot of one's identity and a crucial tool for making a memorable first impression. Did you know that people form an impression of you in just a split second of seeing your face? This is why a great portrait is so powerful—it not only showcases your professionalism but also your unique personality, helping you stand out and connect instantly.

I've had the pleasure of collaborating with The Good Marketer team on several shoots, capturing their headshots and team photos. Studies show that having a professional headshot can make you seem more competent and trustworthy. It's no wonder that The Good Marketer, a marketing agency, prioritise great portraits. For them, these portraits aren't just about looking polished; they’re a strategic way to convey their brand's values and create a genuine connection with their audience.

Having done many corporate headshots, I'd say professional portraits aren't just for work—they're valuable for personal reasons, too. Why? Because a great portrait can capture who you are and express your personality in a way that words can't. Whether it's for social media, dating profiles, or just to share with friends and family, a professional portrait can help you present your best self. It’s a way to mark milestones, boost your confidence, and create a lasting image that represents you authentically. In a world where visual impressions are key, investing in a high-quality portrait isn’t just a luxury—it's a practical way to make a positive and lasting impression.

The two photos on the left are the portraits of the stunning Elena! She wanted a mixture of formal and casual shots, capturing both her professional and relaxed vibes. The result is a great showcase of her versatility and personality, a good example of how a portrait session can highlight different sides of a person, all while keeping it stylish and fun!

Special Occasions

I've had the pleasure of documenting a variety of unique celebrations, each with its own unforgettable atmosphere. From the proud day of Jonathan's graduation at the UCL (University College London), a milestone filled with joy and a sense of accomplishment, to Alexandra’s 1st birthday, where every giggle and first step was cherished, these are just a few examples of the special occasions I’ve captured. Each event was unique and filled with moments worth remembering, all preserved in a collection of heartfelt photographs.

With a professional photographer, you can be fully present in your special moments without any distractions, knowing that every precious memory will be preserved in high-quality images. From the laughter to the tears, a professional captures it all, letting you enjoy the occasion without any worries!

Chris and Jayme's Casual Engagement Shoot in East London Streets

This year wrapped up on a romantic note with a unique London engagement shoot - Jayme and Chris, a couple from the US, made the trip across the pond for a holiday, where they received this shoot as a lovely gift from their cousin. They wanted something different from the usual posed engagement photos, opting instead for candid, lifestyle-inspired shots that capture the essence of their love story.

Our journey took us through the eclectic streets of East London, where vibrant graffiti served as a colourful backdrop to their natural moments together. We wandered into a few of the city's charming spots, including Leadenhall Market, Brick Lane, and the legendary Ten Bells Pub, famously associated with Jack the Ripper. We ended the day at a cosy English pub, surrounded by festive decorations, where they toasted to their future. It was a perfect blend of historic charm and modern love, captured in every frame.🌹

“We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.” Katie Thurmes

That quote by Katie Thurmes sums up why I love what I do: capturing people's special moments so they can just relax and have a good time.

This year, I had the pleasure to photograph a wedding in Chelsea Old Town Hall, some fun birthdays and corporate events such as Superdrug Presents and Ingleton Wood LLP’s annual corporate client drinks reception at the Flight Club.

Unless there is a specific request, I usually try to get a mix of candid and posed shots discreetly, edit a great selection and deliver via Google Drive and a separate photo gallery for clients to easily share the images with their guests (password protected of course!)

Event Photography: Superdrug Presents
Billie Faiers at Superdrug Presents

One of the exciting events that I covered this year is Superdrug Presents. Superdrug launched its first beauty event at The Yard, Shoreditch this year. It’s a whole weekend event with lots of different masterclasses, beauty treatment studio and exclusive new product reviews. It was lots of fun just to watch. Guest include The Only Way is Essex favourite Billie Faiers, Love Island star Kaz Crossley, Influencer Imogen Horton…

Event Photography: Chestertons Polo in the Park
Chestertons Polo in the Park 2019

I was commissioned to cover Chestertons Polo in the Park in Hurlingham Park, Fulham by one of its sponsors, ICM, I photographed the VIP area, the game between Frasers England and Australia and the award ceremony.

It was exciting to witness the game as it changes too. World-renowned polo player Nina Clarkin competed alongside her male teammates in the Frasers England, levelling the playing field in this traditionally male sport.

Did you know - Polo was originally invented 2,500 years ago as a cavalry training exercise, not as a spectator sport and very little has changed over the years. When the game breaks at halftime, people are invited to walk on the field and stomp down the turf that are torn up by the horses’ hooves during the game, this is called divot stomping, a very important tradition (and fun for the audience) in polo!

Blue Cross

Speaking of horses, this summer, I also documented a horse rescue mission and took photos of some of the animals in Blue Cross Rehoming Centre in Burford. Photographing these animals had to be done discreetly, as some were more nervous and sensitive than others. I have two bunnies at home, which helps me to understand and interact with the animals I work with better.

According to Blue Cross, every summer, the number of strays admitted to Blue Cross rises by almost two thirds, compared to the winter months. This is because animals tend to stray further in the warm weather, especially if they are not neutered. Check out their website to see what amazing things they do and give them some help if possible.

Another charity that I helped with this year is The Life You Can Save. Name based on the book written by Peter Singer, the charity held the 10th Anniversary Edition book launch at The Conduit Club, Mayfair. The charity’s work is based on ideas from the book. This book tells us how giving just a little money to the right causes can be enough to save a life, very inspiring! Check out what great things the charity does and download the free e-book from their website.

Event Photography & Video Production: Taipei Representative Office in the UK

I’m from Taiwan, so allow me to talk about Taiwan for a bit! This year again, I photographed the official Taiwan National Day Reception, held by the Taipei Representative Office in the UK at the National Liberal Club. I’m very proud of being a Taiwanese, and especially proud that our country is one of the most democratic and open-minded countries in Asia. This year, same-sex marriage was also legalised in Taiwan – the first in Asia!

The Cultural Event Series was part of a long-standing relationship with the Taiwan Cultural Division, who I have been working with for 6 years. Below is a very short video I made to highlight some of their events this year.

More events:

Check Culture of Taiwan website to see their upcoming events in the new year.

VR film screening at Taiwan Film Festival

Taiwan finally had its own film festival this year in the UK (and Iceland!). Festival curator Aephie Chen thinks 'the uniqueness of Taiwanese film is largely overlooked, as it has long been considered a part of Chinese-language cinema- a broad and indistinct category... plenty of talented emerging filmmakers and films remain unknown and this festival aims to change that.'

I took photos of the screening of legendary filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang's VR film ‘The Deserted’ and opening reception in Asia House. Ambassador David Lin was in attendance, as well as director Tsai Ming-Liang and many other notable figures from the UK cinema and television industry.

One of the reasons I love my job is to help people photograph who they are, as they are at that moment and show their best side through my photographic work.

This year, I had the great opportunity to take portraits for people who are amazing in their own ways... Shelly - a very brave and positive lady; Donald from the States, who I enjoyed the conversation about Taiwan’s history and politics with; Former Olympic athlete Patrick with a great smile; Dr. Karim and Dr.Mohan - winners of Best Doctor of the Year Award 2019 at Safety in Beauty Diamond Awards... I am very grateful for all their trusts and the opportunities they gave me, and I’m truly inspired by all of them and their individual stories.

Kids enjoying gelato (Gelati London) at Spitalfields Markets

Gelati is company that makes delicious gelatos and sell them at different spots across London. If you don't know yet - gelato is Italian for ‘frozen’ and is generally creamier, denser and richer-tasting than ice cream.

A combination of commercial photography and event photography skills is required for this project, plus research with a moodboard beforehand and improvisation on the day. We took photos of the Gelati customers at their stands at St Paul's and Spitalfields Market in a sunny day this summer, showing the 'instant happiness' that their gelatos could offer. A fun day it was!

Vampirette

As a creative person, I love to work with other creatives, and Stephanie Ashton is definitely on top of my list. Stephanie is a transgender model and blogger, I met her last year for her steampunk-themed shoot. This year, she took it to another level, vampirette in three different eras - Medieval, Victorian and Modern time.

As before, she sourced all her beautiful outfits from different parts of the world, with the help of the brilliant costume designer Lyndsey and amazing Makeup artist Cindy. It was a fun shoot and the results are stunning.

Dorothy Circus Gallery

If you like art and fancy something different, Dorothy Circus Gallery in West London is the place to be. I started taking photos for their exhibition openings since this autumn, featuring the work of artists including Saner (Edgar Flores) and Matthew Grabelsk, and will continue to work with them next year.

It's not just about the art collections. The gallery itself is like a quirky little wonderland and every corner is picturesque!

Interior & Event Photography: Kimpton Fitzroy London Hotel
Christmas at Kimpton Fitzroy London Hotel

My last project of the year was at the Kimpton Fitzroy London Hotel, a Grade II listed landmark building with luxurious contemporary designer interiors. Photographing their beautiful interiors with festive decorations and Christmas Carols is definitely the perfect way to end this year!
